The Nuclear Operations capability consists of 4 capabilities providing technical support (commercial work, R&D, nuclear foresight & advice) to a wide range of customers including the UK government.
Measurement and Analysis – Analysis Laboratory Capability
The M&A- Analysis Laboratory provides solutions to customer needs in two capabilities;
- M&A-Central Laboratory (NNL-CL) is R&D Analysis Laboratory operating unique facilities in a consultative and non-completive market undertaking work for SL and MoD. The capability undertakes longer term research projects to develop analytical methods and undertake complex analytical measurements. This capability will develop a routine analysis capability into the Analytical Service provider for Sellafield Site over the next 10 years and will be one of the largest radioanalytical service providers in Europe.
- M&A-Preston Laboratory (NNL-P) is UKAS accredited ILW Analysis Laboratory that undertakes ‘routine radiochemical analysis’ and trades in a transactional / competitive market alongside Wood Grp and Tradebe Inutec. The laboratory provides UKAS accredited radiochemical, physical and chemical data to enable EDF and Magnox Ltd to characterise their discharges and disposals in line with UK Regulator requirements.
The M&A-P capability also performs immobilisation, decontamination and process chemistry work packages for a range of customers (SL, RWM, Magnox Ltd, Dounraey).
To this end the M&A capability currently has the capability to deliver routine and complex analysis on a range of operational and waste materials. This capability will become the most comprehensive radioanalytical capability in Europe as NNL takes responsibility for delivering the analytical provision for Sellafield site over the next decade.

Skills: Classified Workers, DV Clearance DAP’s, Internal Project Management, High Active SQEP (G/Box and F/hood), Laboratory Operations (safety, waste management, consumable procurement).
Facilities: High Active Facilities (Alpha boxes, gloveboxes, shielded fumehoods, scrubbed fumehoods) full radiometrics capability, UKAS accreditation, Transport Capability, ICP-MS / OES, Physical Analytical Instrumentation.
Collaborations: Sellafield Ltd – RAP Project, SME’s and University of Manchester.
